Biogas project

Seed Bangla has been at the forefront of biogas technology in Bangladesh since 2006, beginning its journey as a Partner Organization (PO) with IDCOL under the SNV fund for Domestic Biogas Plants. SNV, a Netherlands-based international development organization, supports sustainable solutions in agriculture, energy, and water sectors. Over time, our expertise and commitment to innovation led us to become a recognized Technical Service Provider (TSP). By 2007, we further strengthened our position by becoming an enlisted Technical Partner with GIZ and IFC, expanding our capabilities in biogas technology and sustainable energy solutions. GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) is a German development agency that provides technical expertise for sustainable projects, while IFC (International Finance Corporation), a member of the World Bank Group, promotes private sector investment in emerging markets. With nearly two decades of experience, Seed Bangla has played a pioneering role in transforming the biogas sector, offering advanced, large-scale solutions that significantly contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Dutch Dairy Cow Dung CSTR Project, Mawa, Munshigonj

Today, Seed Bangla stands as the only biogas technology specialist in Bangladesh that has successfully executed commercial-scale biogas projects with long-term sustainability. We are responsible for constructing approximately 90% of all commercial biogas plants in the country, many of which generate electricity for captive consumption.

Our key projects include Dutch Dairy (2,000 m³, 4,000 kWh), and Phenix Poultry (1,750 m³, 3,500 kWh). We have also contributed to social and humanitarian initiatives such as the Bhashanchar Asrayan Project (Rohingya Camp), where we installed 260 community-based biogas plants of 8 m³ each. Our continued commitment to innovation, technical excellence, and sustainable energy solutions has solidified Seed Bangla’s reputation as the industry leader in large-scale biogas technology across Bangladesh.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AT BHASHANCHAR ROHINGA CAMP

As of September 2024, nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees are sheltered in Bangladesh. Among them, approximately 125,000 have been relocated to Bhashan Char, while the majority reside in the Ukhiya and Teknaf camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Given the massive population influx, waste management remains a significant challenge, particularly in the refugee camps. As part of a pilot initiative, Seed Bangla constructed biogas plants in Ukhiya to address this issue. Additionally, in Bhashan Char, where 125,000 Rohingya refugees have been relocated, Seed Bangla has implemented an advanced biogas-based waste management system. The system processes 40 metric tons of human excreta per day, collected from 1,400 houses, 16,000 toilets, and 120 shelters, all connected to 260 biogas plants under the Asrayan Prokolpo, the project managed by the Bangladesh Navy.

Each 10m³ biogas plant generates gas for cooking, while the residual slurry is filtered using a specially designed system by Seed Bangla. This filtration process ensures that the water meets all environmental standards set by Bangladesh. The remaining solid waste is further processed into organic fertilizer, which is then sold in the local market, making the initiative both environmentally sustainable and economically viable.
